¡We found them at last!
Moenkhausia pittieri “diamond tetras” in their natural habitat! For 3 years I tried to film these small Characiformes in their natural habitat with no
success for they are partially extinct in their wild form.
After searching for years, Simeon Perez, found a creek with partial clear waters which has a stable population of Moenkhausia pittieri
or “diamond tetras”. The diamond tetra is autochthonous to the rivers arround the Lake of Valencia in the Carabobo State in Venezuela.
All the numerous rivers and creeks that we visited where contaminated and therefore had no life expectancy for the diamond tetras.
The next step to take would be to acquire a plot of land where this creek is born and convert it into a natural reservoir. This way, a
Venezuelan endemic species (and what for me is) “one of the last Diamond Tetra natural habitats left” can be preserved.
